Health Threat With Non-Stick – if You Are Not Careful, it is a Danger To Life?
If scratched, there is a risk of release of toxic gases and chemicals
9,000 microplastic particles from a single stripe: ICMR
New Delhi :
The ‘Indian Council of Medical Research’ (ICMAR) has warned that there is a risk of serious health problems arising from non-stick cookware.
Even if there is a small scratch on the non-stick cookware, toxic gases and harmful chemicals will be released from the Teflon coating on it and get into the food.
At least 9,100 microplastic particles are released from a single line. It is said that this danger exists when cooking at a temperature higher than 170 degrees Celsius in scratched non-stick cookware. Non-stick utensils get a lot of scratches while washing. According to this calculation, there is a risk of releasing a few lakhs of microplastics from these.
According to ICMMAR, these can cause hormonal imbalance, cancer and fertility problems. Cooking in clay pots instead of non-stick cookware is safer. Granite vessels are also suggested as another alternative. However, it states that they should not have any chemical coatings on them. Food grade stainless steel utensils are also good. ICMMAR has recently released these guidelines under the title ‘Food Guidelines for Indians’*
